An Icy Afternoon

It was a very cold Wednesday night in Carrollton, Texas -- a suburb of Dallas -- and one local business left a sprinkler running. Or maybe a pipe burst. In any case, a marvelous display of ice was the result, though it lasted only a day.

• Half and Half
Where thick ice meets almost-tropical green
• Cold Leaves
Very cold air and an errant sprinkler coat hardy winter bushes in individually thick blankets of ice
• Low Overhang
• Fortress Of Solitude
Like Superman's home away from home, this icy structure against the blue sky stands forever. Or, in this case, until roughly the next afternoon, when it was almost completely melted
• Outdoor Refrigeration Even after most of the rest melted, this little section was still icy, having been sheltered from the sun by the overhanging ice. It lasted an extra day, perfect for keeping the berries chilled. Too bad that I assume those berries would make me sick
• Frozen In Time It was very cold Wednesday night in Dallas, and only a fool would run a sprinkler that night. Fortunately for me, there is at least one fool at a local business, and the sprinkler left behind an amazing display of ice in many different forms
• Berry Cold The little red berries common to winter always make me feel a little cold, just looking at them, but the icicles make me shiver
• Ghostly Icicles The translucent beauty of these icicles suggest something, but I\'m not sure what. Medical scans? Ghosts?
• Ice Cavern On the backside of the bushes, the water spray must have been much lighter, so the icicles are more delicate. It can be hard to get a sense of scale from this picture, creating the possible that those little branches are actually massive logs, and that this is a large cavern
• Guess Which Way The Wind Was Blowing
Just the tip of a longer branch. The uneven buildup probably has much less to do with the wind than with the fact that the busted pipe was to the left of this branch from where I stood to take the shot.
• Berry-cicles
• Terminus One side of the shrubbery was showered, while this side remained dry. Individual leaves ended up half-frozen
• Protective Sheath
The branch was thin, but the ice was thick

• Selective Targeting The berry-bushes in the foreground were dry and happy, while the foliage in the background, hit by the busted pipe or sprinkler, froze
